But if I'm choosing, my inclination will always be like somebody who wants to tell a story that comes from inside of them. Whether I love a movie or not, I would rather see a movie that's one person's vision then sort of an amalgamation of a bunch of notes and a bunch of things, that's trying to appeal to everybody. But there's no doubt with Mike Flanagan, Sebastian Gutierrez, Zack Snyder, Robert Rodriguez, these are all people who have a very strong sense of what they want, and they are the ones who are carrying that vision all the way through. That can be a beautiful part of the collaboration. It doesn't mean that someone can't write a gorgeous script and someone can't come and direct that script. So for me, definitely having one person who has the vision that we're all serving, I think there's something really helpful about that. I think so many influences for me cinema-wise are European and auteur-driven, and a lot of movies in the '60s and '70s. there's a magic element that comes from being together. I think, again, that's very resonant to me after this year and a half. There's also an element that I love of family - and not just family that you're born with, but family that you build and the fact that you are by far stronger as a team. So to me, there is an escapist quality to this movie, for sure. You fall into a world for a couple of hours and forget about your life and fall into these characters that have been invented in front of you, especially if it's also really visually stimulating like this movie is. I really think that - particularly after this last year and a half - there's something about cinema that is like a magic trick. But I think what was also key, and I think he chose the right people for it, was that it was imperative that the performances be grounded in a certain kind of humanity and simplicity, so that the world around it can be that big. But certainly this, Navot had a very strong idea of what he wanted it to look like and feel like, and it was always meant to be larger than life. I'm always interested in auteur-driven pieces and in many different genres. Well, for sure, it is an alternate reality, absolutely. NPHC currently has seven active chapters at Middle Tennessee State University, and they are proud to say they have all four of the National Pan-Hellenic sororities as a part of their campus: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta, all of whom were recently presented with plaques representing their organizations in the Student Union Commons. The National Pan-Hellenic Council, also known as The Divine Nine, is comprised of nine historically African American sororities and fraternities. These groups were created with the intention of building a better world around them for themselves and others. The University recently recognized this work, dedicating 10 special bronze plaques on the Student Union Commons for each of the “Divine 9” fraternities and sororities as well a plaque commemorating the NPHC’s 50-year relationship with the institution. With such an awesome legacy, we’d like to highlight the four NPHC sororities on campus whose missions are to uplift their communities and help cultivate a more equitable society for everyone. There are thousands of Greek organizations in existence just in the United States, but some spotlight should really be shed on the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which was founded in at the beginning of the 20 th century by students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). People have a lot of assumptions about Greek life, but few know about the history of education and philanthropy associated with these organizations. There’s just not a wealth of information out there geared toward people like us who don’t have families, are first timers, and probably won’t be returning year after year. Even though I spent the better part of 6 months traversing around Europe, planning an unsanctioned trip to Disney was one of the hardest trips I’ve ever had to plan. We weren’t going to sleep on site, eat on site, rent lockers, buy souvenirs (we failed on this last part), or any of the Disney jazz they try to sign you up for. When my best friend and I decided to trek down to Orlando for a much needed vacation, we committed to only letting the theme parks take our money for park admission and possibly parking. There is no way to “win” against them, they will always be getting some of your money, but you can certainly lessen the blow by putting in just a little bit more effort. You wouldn’t walk into a casino and say that the house is on your side, would you? Like a casino, theme parks are trying see how much you’re willing to shell out for the thrills. Well, let me break the news to you… you can’t. “If I don’t stay at a hotel on site, how will I get around? If I don’t buy my tickets directly from Disney, will I still be able to get in? Where will I eat in the area, should I just get a dining plan? Any “deal” when it comes to Disney World must be a hoax, no one does Disney for cheap, right? I can trust Disney, right?” It can leave even the most seasoned traveler asking questions like: Even though Disney is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Earth, the amount of information about traveling “under the radar” is limited. The theme parks do a pretty good job of making the prospect of not picking out an “authorized” vacation package scary and daunting. So for all of you upcoming mouseketeers out there, consider this when planning your next Orlando vacation:ĭisney (and Orlando in general) is one of those places where visitors throw away thousands of dollars in potential savings for the convenience of getting one, simple, all-inclusive Disney sanctioned package. Previously I would have thought this impossible, but when great information falls into your lap, you should always use it and, more importantly, share it. The results were pretty awesome we managed to each have a perfect vacation in Orlando for under $100 a day. We planned our trip very last minute, but we worked hard and put in a lot of research. Since this is a food blog, I obviously don’t normally post about travel but, like food, it is another of my many passions! One of my favorite pastimes is finding ways to make travel as cheap as possible, and over the years I have picked up some great hints and tips! This past winter, my best friend and I went to Orlando to visit many of the area parks down there. On August 1st, I will pick two lucky winners! If you have previously commented you can drop me an e-mail and I’ll add you to the list!** To enter, leave a comment telling me what YOU do to save money on Orlando theme parks, or, if you’ve never been, HELPFUL feedback on this post. **UPDATE, July 24: With the overwhelming response to this post, I am hosting a giveaway of TWO $25 DISNEY GIFT CARDS that can be used online, in stores, or at the parks. I can’t thank everyone enough for all the great tips. In fact, we might not even get a year off. Less than two years later, Bess married Woody Booher, whom Roger looked. He was only 5 months old when his mother took her children and left his father, with whom he claims to have spoken only once in his life, when he was 10 years old. Interestingly, we aren't done discussing any of these guys. Ex-New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens will be on the Hall of Fame ballot for the 10th and final time in 2022. William Roger Clemens was born on August 4, 1962, in Dayton, Ohio, the fifth child of Bill and Bess Clemens. The period of time a player used to be eligible to sit on the Hall of Fame ballot was 15 years, but the Hall of Fame knocked it down to 10 years in 2014, seemingly in light of worries from some Hall of Famers over Bonds and Clemens - and their PED ties - possibly getting in. Sammy Sosa was also in his 10th year, though he has never even gotten to 20 percent (it was 18.5 percent this year).Īs such, the four fall off the ballot for the 2023 voting cycle. Barry Bonds (66 percent), Roger Clemens (65.2) and Curt Schilling (58.6) have all fallen short of the 75-percent threshold required for induction into the Hall. This came five years after all the media circus about her extramarital affair with Roger Clemens, and. His blazing fastball, consistently clocked in the mid 90s (MPH), have made him one of the games most dominant pitchers. This was the 10th and final voting cycle on the BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot for a trio of controversial Hall of Fame candidates who have gotten pretty close to induction, trickling down to a fourth who hasn't. Roger Clemens was a professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball for 24 years, most notably for the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Mindy McCready took her life on February 17, 2013. He broke into the major leagues with the Red Sox in 1984, posting a 9-4 record. David Ortiz was elected to the Hall of Fame on his first ballot. So, there was tension in the air even when Piazza stepped up. We now know the results of the BBWAA portion of the 2022 Baseball Hall of Fame vote. Last winter, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens each failed to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame for the 10th time, ending their tenure on the Baseball Writers’ Association. After throwing Mike Piazza’s broken bat back at him during the 2000 World Series, Roger Clemens went back to the clubhouse and cried. First Paint measures how long a browser takes until starting to paint anything on the screen. In the following, we introduce three popular metrics that cover different aspects of web performance: With respect to “speed”, there is no single, universal performance metric for a browser or a web page. Accordingly, we only measure memory usage on MacOS and Windows. Similarly, memory management is quite peculiar on mobile devices, with background applications aggressively suspended when resource shortage is detected. Given that accurate battery measurements require connecting a power monitor to a device under test - which is even less practical for a laptop - and given the above argument, we only focus on our mobile platform for this metric. This is not always practical for reasons we explain shortly, but we argue it is also not needed.įor example, battery usage is way more important on mobile devices rather than, for example, laptops which are often connected to the power line. With respect to resource usage, the ideal scenario is to monitor all resources across our platforms. Our performance evaluation focuses on two main areas: resource usage (CPU, memory, battery) and speed (page load time). Both were the release candidates for Brave 1.0.Below we report the specific version under test for each platform. This was done to ensure a fair analysis given the changes that tend to happen between major releases of Chromium. In the case of Opera and Edge (for desktop), we resort to their Beta version since the stable versions were both behind Chromium/Blink (the common open source engine) compared to the most recent version of Chrome. Android: Samsung J7DUO (2018) equipped with Android 9.0, an Octa-core (2x2.2 GHz Cortex-A73, 6x1.6 GHz Cortex-A53), 4GB memory, and a 3,000mAh battery.įor a given browser, we evaluate its most recent stable version.Tests executed on a fresh Windows user account, with default settings, and only the browser being tested running. Windows: Lenovo Ideapad 110 with Intel i3 CPU, 8GB memory, Windows 10.All tests are executed on a fresh MacOS user account, with default settings, and only the browser being tested running. MacOS: 2015 Model with Intel i5 CPU, 16GB RAM, running MacOS 10.14.4.Testing Environment Hardware and Software We discuss in detail the methodology and techniques that we used in working out the savings we wrote about at 1.0 launch: that Brave ends up loading popular web pages 3x to 6x faster, while using about half the memory and power as well as a third of data, saving seconds of time and megabytes of data for every page load. We use the testbed to compare these browsers across memory use, page load speed, data and power use, as well as traditional synthetic benchmarks. And that’s doubly true on slower or laggier connections where every bit counts, or older devices where every stray CPU cycle or bit of RAM rapidly adds up.įor the 1.0 evaluation, we put together a comprehensive testbed, pitting Brave against Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge on Windows, MacOS, and Android. Because Brave blocks third party all of that out of the box, it’s considerably faster than other browsers. The rest is advertising, trackers, and other material which takes extra time and data to download, occupies space in memory, and needs more CPU time and power to process. Most websites try to send large amounts of data, of which only a little is the “stuff” the user actually wants to see. Using Chromium as a foundation lets Brave’s small team focus on building the powerful features which set the browser apart rather than the core web-browsing experience shared by all browsers. Chromium is now the building block for most contemporary web browsers. The goal was to take the work Google had done building Chrome and create a shared core for any browser which wants to use it. The Chromium Project was established by Google, based on Apple’s WebKit. In the spirit of transparency, we here present our methodology and detailed results.īrave is open source and is built on top of two other open source projects: the Chromium project and the Blink rendering engine. In our “1.0 reviewer guide”, we summarized the significant savings Brave users can expect. As ever, web browsing performance is a key priority for Brave, so we set out to evaluate in detail how it stacks up against the competition and devised a methodology for doing so. In 2019, Brave reached a major milestone with the release of the 1.0 version.
